Kalypso is one of Crete's most distinctive coastal resorts, nestled within a dramatic rocky cove on the southern coast of Rethymnon overlooking the Libyan Sea. Built into a unique canyon-like landscape of rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and Mediterranean vegetation, the resort has developed a remarkable identity through its close relationship with nature.
The proposed renovation celebrates this exceptional setting, preserving the authentic character of Kalypso while transforming it into a refined Mediterranean retreat. Respecting the existing structures and natural geology, the design allows the landscape to remain the protagonist, with architecture carefully integrated into the cliffs and connected through restored pathways and terraces.

Inspired by the timeless heritage of Knossos, the atmosphere of Chania's Old Venetian Harbour, and the dramatic relationship between architecture and nature found in Meteora, the project combines earthy materials, handcrafted details, and warm Mediterranean tones. Natural stone, terracotta, textured plaster, timber, and native planting create an architecture that feels rooted in the Cretan landscape.
Rather than redefining Kalypso, the renovation enhances its unique identity, creating a contemporary destination that honours its history, respects its extraordinary setting, and offers an authentic luxury experience immersed in nature.

The proposed renovation celebrates this exceptional setting, preserving the authentic character of Kalypso while transforming it into a refined Mediterranean retreat. Respecting the existing structures and natural geology, the design allows the landscape to remain the protagonist, with architecture carefully integrated into the cliffs and connected through restored pathways and terraces.
Kalypso Proposed Scheme
The renovation begins with a deep respect for Kalypso's existing architectural fabric. Rather than replacing the resort, the proposal embraces its original structure, preserving the existing buildings and working with their robust concrete framework. This adaptive reuse strategy significantly reduces environmental impact while protecting the unique relationship between the architecture and the dramatic cliffside landscape.

The intervention focuses on refining rather than reinventing. Existing façades are carefully reinterpreted through a contemporary Cretan and Mediterranean architectural language, introducing warmth, texture, and human scale while respecting the original composition. Geometries are simplified and clarified, balconies and terraces are refined, and openings are enhanced to maximise natural light, cross ventilation, and uninterrupted views of the Libyan Sea.
Inspired by traditional Greek architecture, the renovation introduces natural stone cladding, handcrafted lime plaster, terracotta tones, timber pergolas, shaded outdoor living spaces, deep reveals, and carefully detailed architectural elements that strengthen the resort's identity without overpowering it. Every addition is subtle, allowing the existing architecture and dramatic landscape to remain the defining features of Kalypso.
The project seeks to reconnect Kalypso with the qualities that have always defined it: water, landscape, and history. Water becomes a central design element, extending beyond the natural cove through reflective pools, cascading water features, tranquil courtyards, and wellness spaces that reinforce the peaceful atmosphere of the resort. These interventions create a continuous dialogue between architecture and the sea, enriching the guest experience while celebrating the site's exceptional setting.
Equally important is the preservation of Kalypso's history. Rather than erasing the past, the renovation builds upon it, respecting the existing structures and revealing their inherent character. Inspired by the cultural legacy of Knossos, the intimate atmosphere of Chania's Old Venetian Harbour, and the powerful relationship between architecture and nature found in Meteora, the design creates a contemporary expression of Cretan identity that feels authentic, timeless, and deeply rooted in place.
The material palette is intentionally restrained, drawing directly from the colours and textures of Crete. Natural stone, locally sourced limestone, handcrafted lime plaster, terracotta, warm mineral-pigmented concrete, timber, and oxidised metals create an architecture that feels both timeless and authentic. Existing stone walls are restored wherever possible, while new interventions remain complementary and understated.

Ancient olive trees, cypress, aromatic herbs, native shrubs, and wild Mediterranean vegetation are carefully integrated throughout the resort, allowing the buildings to emerge naturally from the rugged terrain. The raw rock formations remain untouched wherever possible, becoming an integral part of the architectural experience.
The renovation transforms Kalypso into a contemporary luxury destination while preserving its authentic spirit. Existing accommodation is upgraded through improved layouts, refined interiors, enhanced wellness facilities, and carefully curated materials inspired by Cretan craftsmanship.
Public spaces are connected through a network of restored stone pathways, staircases, terraces, and panoramic viewpoints that reveal ever-changing views across the Libyan Sea. Restaurants, bars, wellness areas, and communal spaces are designed as natural extensions of the landscape, encouraging outdoor living and a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle.
Sustainability lies at the heart of the proposal. By prioritising adaptive reuse over demolition, the project preserves the embodied energy of the existing buildings while significantly reducing environmental impact. Passive cooling strategies, natural ventilation, local materials, water-efficient landscaping, and energy-conscious systems create a resilient and environmentally responsible resort that responds naturally to the Cretan climate.
The vision for Kalypso is to create a destination that feels as though it has always belonged to this landscape. Every architectural intervention is guided by restraint, allowing the raw beauty of the cliffs, the sea, and the surrounding vegetation to remain the defining experience. Rather than imposing a new architectural identity, the proposal carefully reveals the qualities already present, refining them through thoughtful design and contemporary craftsmanship.
The renovation also re-establishes water as one of Kalypso's defining experiences. Beyond the spectacular natural cove, water is introduced throughout the resort in the form of reflective pools, cascading water features, wellness areas, tranquil courtyards, and infinity pools that frame uninterrupted views of the Libyan Sea.
Movement through the resort is conceived as a journey. Restored pathways, sculpted staircases, panoramic terraces, intimate courtyards, and carefully framed viewpoints reveal the landscape gradually, encouraging exploration and discovery. Every transition offers a new perspective—whether towards the dramatic cliffs, the endless horizon, or the sheltered coves below—creating an experience that is immersive rather than simply visual.
More than a renovation, Kalypso represents a careful rediscovery of place. The project respects the existing architecture, preserves the remarkable landscape, and celebrates the cultural identity of Crete while introducing a refined contemporary vision for Mediterranean hospitality.
