Inspired by the Cretan nature, the project derives its individuality and grace from its surroundings. Located in the middle of the beautiful rural area of Agia in Chania, Greece, the concept aims to blend into the existing landscape and complement the context.

The design approach reflects on the materiality of a traditional winery and its role as an integral part of the rural heritage while adding a contemporary twist. The volumes form a hierarchy within the existing landscape establishing a dialogue with the surroundings. The main multipurpose building, the outbuilding for agricultural utilities and the front residence create a clear border around the courtyard – the heart of the complex.
Once entering the central courtyard through the passage of the main building the visitor is alert to the coherence of the space and its configuration. Directed by the buildings and monolithic stone walls, the view opens up onto the gardens, displaying the undeveloped landscape. The main building houses an area for the production of wine, wine tasting space, several bedrooms and other amenities.

The dominantly horizontal character of the project is juxtaposed by several paths adding a secondary vertical layer into the hierarchy of the different components. This creates connections within the multipurpose residence without dramatically interrupting the flow of the gardens that pour into the spaces in between the buildings.

A thorough approach with regard to detail, the context and virtue of the materials strengthens the contemporary character of the architectural language. The use of locally sourced stone and wood as primary materials blends into the present earth tones.
